Not so early to rise, a warm cup of coffee and a stroll around the ball field before departing, we stopped by Loretta's to let her know we were on our way. We got loaded up with sweet corn to grill in the evening when we stopped for the day.
We departed the tiny community of Bogard and we wiggled (or wended) along W through Ludlow and other small towns before getting ourselves pointed west on US 36 to make up a little time before re-enacting our trip on US 136.
US136 holds many wonderful sights, it is Nebraska's Heritage Highway for homesteaders, more interesting sights than just plowing along on the interstate, lots of history to share and places to stop and take a break like the Izaak Walton League Rest area... Clean picnic area with cold fresh water to fill to water cube.
But the miles would also share with us the road had been widened, many of the towns looked tired, and where there once were many cattle pastures and homesteads there were fewer and many abandoned.
By the time we reached the end of 136...
we realized we were not going to make our anticipated evening destination, so searching our now favorite camping and park related website (uscampgrounds.info) and pulled into Gallagher Canyon SWA where we collapsed for the evening.
Grilled hot dogs and sweet corn we snacked, and then became snacks for the local biting insects...not nearly as bad as last year on the upper Mississippi contending with Wisconsin's state bird.
Bird watching from our chairs we were visited by some little warbler/vireos and red headed woodpeckers. Just before tucking in and listening to whatever the resident sqwaucking night bird was, a Barred owl swept over us from a couple trees down and made for a copse ... Probably wondering where it's meal was hiding... Muriel had made friends with the site rabbits (they are EVERYWHERE) while we were cooking.
Enough sun to still be reading my book w/o lanterns at 9:30pm, Overnight temps stayed above 70...warm night :-P
Leaveing you with a scene we added our own words to...
"There must have been a spectacle with the law... The rubber neckin' sightseers were spreading rumors and tellin' lies." Auburn NE
