Day 1 rummenations

20 years ago Earl and I ventured west on US 136 to "get the heck outa dodge". We lived about 2 miles as the crow flies from the speedway in Indianapolis and the days leading up to "the big race" that was almost the only thing you could hear...even inside our apartment!

We have both always had a soft spot for old maps, old highways and forgotten byways, and we had been wondering where federal road 136 went...one end stops less than a 1/2 mile from the main gate to the track...and we figured Memorial Day weekend was as good a time as any to find out where the other end was.

Tomorrow, day 2 of our 2014 exploration, we will have an opportunity to stop and see how the corn field is doing and maybe have another picnic lunch....preferably w/o the dead cow nearby.... We'll be sure to post a picture or two....we have started to cross parts of the Sante Fe trail where the wagon ruts are still visible today.

Meanwhile, we are camping overnight in the community softball field if Bogard Missouri, population 164.  The softball field is adjacent to the remains of the Bogard school gymnasium (closed 1985) and across the street from the community park and city hall, both of which sit on the site of the former school building...all that remains is a memorial, the stadium seating for the gym and the industrial arts building, the kids nowadays are bussed south along the Lewis  and Clark trail to Carrolton.

Well, now it is time to listen to the lonesome dogs howl (has the makings for a Dave Grisman song) and watch the stars come out.

Night all.

Ps...the have a lot of rabbits here...I mean, A LOT!
